Session 3 - Into the Woods

4 Lamashan 4070

Intro

Light shines and warms your face through a dusty window, as you turn on your straw cot to face another morning.
You push yourselves up, and feel the soreness and bruising of yesterday's battle. You relish the excitement of completing an almost impossible feat, or rather, a vengeful justice.

But as you recount everything from last night, a chill like the cold morning's air runs down your spine as you remember the documents you found. More than documents - notes, detailed accounts of you, your family, and your whereabouts.

Who is watching? Who is planning? What is being planned? Where are they going? How do you stop it?

Left with more questions than answers, you hoist yourself out of bed and prepare for another day in Highrock; excited for your next adventure, but scared that someone else may know it before you.

Session 3: Into the Quiet Grove

"Some paths are hidden for a reason. Some truths are forgotten to protect those who bear them. And some journeys change a group of strangers into a family."

Session Summary

After defeating the Viper League captain Phinala, the Circle returns to High Rock to prepare for their journey into the legendary Quiet Grove. Along the way they uncover new allies within the Willow Watch, strengthen their bond as companions, and officially adopt the name The Circle of the Hunt.

Their journey leads them through enchanted forests, terrifying magical beasts, and the mysterious Silent Mist before they are captured and brought to the hidden Kotengu Mountain Village. There, Silvyn discovers the truth behind her forgotten past and meets the father she believed lost forever.

As answers begin to surface, even darker questions emerge. Evidence suggests Alessia's missing mother may somehow be traveling alongside the Viper League, while an invading Yuan-ti force marches on the village. The session ends as the Circle prepares to defend the Kotengu from an overwhelming assault.

Her determination hardens into a promise:

Every battle brings her one step closer to finding Jona.

Eris

Perhaps the biggest revelation of the session.

Eris finally tells her companions about:

This transforms Eris from the cheerful druid into a far more layered character.

Silvyn

Session 3 belongs to Silvyn.

She learns:

Yet despite discovering the family she never knew...

She chooses the Circle instead.

Preparing for the Journey

Farewell to Lady Gadrick

The party shares everything they learned from the Viper League hideout.

Lady Gadrick warns them about the Quiet Grove, speaking of travelers who disappear into its mysterious mist and never return. She also directs the party to Lada for antidotes before they depart.

Before leaving, Alessia makes one final promise:

"Everyone we kill will be to avenge your husband."

Lada's Trade Shop

The group cashes in nearly every trophy recovered from the Viper League hideout.

Purchases

Important Discovery

Alessia notices the same willow tattoo she previously saw associated with the resistance.

Lada quietly reveals herself to be connected to the Willow Watch.

Farewell to High Rock

Before leaving town, Eris and the others say goodbye to Julia.

Julia quietly admits that most people who enter the Quiet Grove never return.

The normally optimistic Eris is visibly shaken.

Hera gently lowers her head so Julia can embrace her one final time.

The Circle of the Hunt

That evening around the campfire, the party realizes they have become more than traveling companions.

They officially name themselves:

The Circle of the Hunt

Although Alessia initially resists Eris's enthusiasm, she is ultimately the one who proposes the name.

The three commemorate the moment together around the fire—a symbolic beginning to something much larger than themselves.

Campfire Confessions

As the fire burns low, conversations become deeply personal.

Alessia asks Eris why she would risk everything for someone she barely knew.

Eris reveals the truth about her parents.

Alessia quietly promises:

"If you ever seek justice for them...you have my sword."

The friendship between the two grows far beyond simple allies.

Eris's Nightmare

That night, Eris relives the destruction of her home.

Within the flames appears a man she believed dead.

Duke Vanthampur.

He promises:

"You are coming to me."

The nightmare confirms Eris's greatest fear.

Her family's murderer still lives.

Meeting Tyk

The following morning the party encounters an elderly traveler named Tyk and his faithful mastiff, Spike.

Although eccentric, Tyk tells the party of a legendary sword hidden atop Cascadia, guarded by a White Dragon.

He leaves them with one final request:

Should they ever claim the blade...

Call upon him.

Into the Quiet Grove

Frost Wolf Ambush

The entrance to the grove is guarded by monstrous wolves whose howls unleash deadly ice magic.

Highlights include:

Bark, Guardian of the Grove

Deep within the woods the party encounters an awakened tree named Bark.

Unlike many they have met, Bark welcomes respectful travelers.

Most importantly...

Bark confirms seeing a woman matching Jona VanHolding's description only half a day earlier.

She was not alone.

Hidden among her companions were members of the Viper League.

Before departing, Bark gifts Eris enchanted bark capable of curing any poison.

The Silent Mist

Beyond the forest lies absolute silence.

No voices.

No spellcasting.

No sound.

Within the mist the party is ambushed by horrifying Nothics seeking memories, fears, and secrets.

Major moments include:

The Hidden Village

When the battle ends, mysterious Kenku appear from the mist.

Moments later...

The party awakens as prisoners inside the legendary Kotengu Mountain Village.

The Truth About Silvyn

The village leader introduces himself.

Daitengu Kaze.

Silvyn immediately recognizes his scent.

The impossible truth unfolds.

Kaze is her father.

He explains:

Silvyn finally understands why twelve years of her life vanished.

A Family Chosen

Later that evening the party discusses what they've learned.

Silvyn makes her decision.

Though she has found her birthplace...

Her true family is no longer defined by blood.

It is the Circle of the Hunt.

Alessia responds by invoking the VanHolding family motto:

"Unbroken Vows and Unbroken Oaths."

Each member silently commits themselves to one another.

This is arguably the emotional climax of the session.

Audience with Kaze

The following morning Kaze formally welcomes Silvyn home.

He presents the legendary Bow of Shadows and offers her the chance to undertake the Trial of Succession.

Before preparations can begin...

Dame Alice arrives.

The Willow Watch

Dame Alice warns the village.

The Viper League is coming.

Even worse...

She describes a woman wearing dark robes.

One who may be...

Jona VanHolding.

The revelation nearly tears the party apart.

Alessia refuses to believe her mother could willingly serve the Viper League.

Eris and Silvyn stand firmly beside her.

Together they vow to uncover the truth before anyone passes judgment.

Cliffhanger

Outside...

The village bells begin ringing.

A giant hammer crashes through the village gates.

Ten Yuan-ti march forward.

Behind them walks a woman in dark robes.

She freezes upon seeing Alessia.

Then...

A towering barbarian raises his hammer.

The creature speaks only four words.

"We found you."

Events:

As the sun rises, so does the tired and weary party within the Gray Tankard Inn. The druid, always the morning person, gently taps on the door of her companions, letting out a few chirps in doing so. The door is opened by her disheveled half-orc friend. The druid opens her arms offering a hug. Alessia simply passes by, and orders a strong coffee downstairs. Eris is unfazed and continues into the room to stare adoringly at the raven. While Alessia sips her coffee, she smiles as Julia spins around in her cloak, now detailed with a beautiful winter scene.

After a bit of banter at breakfast, the party depart to Lady Gadrick’s home. Alessia summarizes the events that transpired, then presents the “Hit List” to Frieda, asking if she knows anything. Lady Gadrick admits that she was kept in the dark about these matters before her husband passed. She states she has heard the name Phinala before, but wasn’t aware of where she was. She does warn of the Quiet Grove, stating that people do not usually return. She states that there is a mysterious Mist that people have entered, and never returned from, as well as deadly wolves who guard the path into the woods. Eris thanks the Lady for her help, then asks if she has any recommendations for healers in the town, as two of them have been poisoned. Lady Gadrick states that Lada will have some antidotes that may help. Out of gratitude for all the party has done, she states that they may have the potions on the house. As their final goodbye, Alessia solemnly states that “Everyone we kill will be to avenge her husband”. Lady Gadrick nods in thanks.

The party make their way to Lada’s Trader Store. Silvan, the “master negotiator” of the group, is especially excited to present the loot they accumulated. The half-ling owner greets the party. Eris jumps straight in, introducing herself, recapping the events of the past couple days, and then let’s Lada know of Lady Gadrick’s generosity. Lada, impressed by the group’s achievements, hands Eris two antidotes. Silvyn immediately takes one, as does the druid. The concoction is honestly quite disgusting. Eris, after profuse gagging and coughing, smiles forcefully and thanks the half-ling for the potions, even adding they are “delicious”. Unconvinced, Lada just states, huh, I find them pretty nasty.

Silvyn pushes Eris aside now, and proudly pours the 61 mimic teeth she pried from the monster upon the trader’s table. Lada seems interested and counts the teeth. Silvyn asks expectantly “So, how much can I get for these beauties?”. The half-ling looks up, and states that she can give her 61 silver pieces. Silvyn’s initial gusto deflates a bit. She objects, stating that they literally killed a Mimic for those teeth, and that she spent a long time making sure they were all pristine just for Lada. The trader just points to a sign, stating that monster teeth are 1 silver each. Silvyn groans, then takes out the ivory piece, asking if this sweetens the deal. Lada appears amused, and pretends to examine the piece closely. However, she asks what use would she have for more trash. Silvyn then trades her Snake Venom for 40 GP.

Alessia concentrates hard on figuring out if a fight would be worth it, but senses that Lada is probably more powerful than she lets on. She also notices a “willow tree” tattoo on her shoulder. Once she hears that Sylvan has reluctantly agreed to the 61 silver pieces, Alessia approaches the counter. The half-orc swings down the slimy Mimic tongue in front of Lada. She also takes out the snake skin, placing it in front of the half-ling. The trader states she will offer 15 gold for the tongue, and 10 gold for the snake. Alessia immediately agrees.

Finally, it’s the druid’s turn. Eris rolls out Phinala’s Studded Leather, trying to make it glint temptingly in the light. The trader’s eyes light up with interest, asking how much she wants for it. Eris turns to Sylvan, who is stunned by the half-ling’s interest. Sylvan looks at the armor, but can’t ascertain its value, then suggests 500 GP. Eris’ eyebrows raise, doubting it could be worth that much. Nonetheless, the druid owns it. She turns back to the trader, stating that this “valuable” leather was obtained from one of the THE CAPTAINS of the Viper League themselves, it would only be fair to part with it for no less than 500 GP. Surprisingly, Lada states that the armor is worth far more, and she ups the offer to 600 GP. Silvyn squawks, mouth agape, and Alessia’s brows furrow. The group then argue about whether it would be worth it to keep such a valuable item, and they ask if there’s anything more special about the armor they don’t know. The trader simply states it is a magical item, and that it is clearly a quality material. After much debate, Eris makes the final decision, stating no one should wear the armor since they could be mistaken as enemies. Sylvan and Alessia reluctantly agree, and the druid comes into a small fortune.

Eris also takes out her gems from the wear boar battle, asking if Lada could evaluate their value and identify the gems themselves. Lada states that the gems are Ruby, Emerald, Topaz, and Crystal, and notes they are each worth 90 GP. Eris decides to party with the pretty jewels, and takes 360 GP from the trader. The druid also offers the Iridescent Scale, and the trader gives her 100 GP for it. Sylvan then pays for the Ring of Mind Shielding, emptying hers and Alessia’s pockets of their gold. Eris generously splits her small fortune with her companions, giving them each 350 GP. With their renewed coin, Sylvan purchases 4 Healing Potions, Eris purchases 2 Healing Potions, and Alessia purchases 4 Healing Potions. Additionally, Eris summons Gooseberries for her friends to have for some extra health options during their next battle.

As the party departs the trader shop, Eris asks if Lada knows anything about the Quiet Grove. Lada states that it is guarded by wolves, that the trees speak, and there is a deadly mist haunting the woods. She looks at Sylvan, stating that she is surprised they don’t know more of the area. Sylvan only furrows her brows, wondering what that is about.

The party head to the Gray Tankard Inn to pack up and depart. As they are leaving, Eris makes sure to say goodbye to Julia, the adventurer. Eris states that they will be heading to the Quiet Grove, and Julia saddens, saying that she will never see them again. Eris startles, asking why she would say that. Julia only states that she has known many people that have left and never returned. The druid’s face falls, thinking of how tragic it is that someone so young must experience so much loss. Alessia confidently states they will survive and someday return. Hera lowers her head, and Julia hugs her face. The horse lifts up her head and whinnies while Julia holds on tight.

The group has a thankfully uneventful first day of travel, walking a beaten path and anyone they come across mind their own business. They eventually find a safe clearing with a small tree line to make camp. When the party starts to settle down to rest, Eris suggests that, after so many battles, from the King’s attempted assassination to the Wereboars, to their last battle with the Viper League, it only seems right they come up with a name for their little group. Alessia is initially reluctant, but agrees it would be a good idea. She immediately regrets her cooperation when Eris starts gushing about how it’s a milestone in their connection as friends. Sylvan just shrugs, stating sounds good to her. Ironically, it is Alessia who comes up with the official name (what a softy!), and the group settle on Circle of the Hunt. To commemorate this historical occasion, Eris demands that they hold hands. The others refuse, so she settles for touching finger tips. Alessia holds out her flail, and Eris says that’s good enough. While touching, Eris asks for the spirits of nature to bless the circle. She then prompts the group to take a deep breath all together, soaking in the moment of connection.

The group warm up by the campfire, admittedly a bit closer. As they discuss their adventures, Alessia asks Eris why she, a druid who openly opposes how Hesperia operates, would want to help her save her family. Eris states that while she is not fond of societal hierarchy, she has also faced deep loss. It is clear to her that, regardless of their conflicting views, Alessia has a good and loyal soul, and she would never want her, or anyone for that matter, to experience such a loss. It is a lonely world, to have no family in the world, why would she want her to suffer the same fate? Alessia nods appreciatively, and asks who she lost. Eris solemnly states that it was her parents. The half-orc follows up, asking if it was murder. Eris only nods sadly. The fighter states that if someone murdered her family, she would go to the ends of the earth to seek justice. The druid states that the person responsible got what was coming to him. Alessia asks if he is alive still. Eris pauses then, pondering his fate. She sighs, stating that she honestly doesn’t know, for he had powers that bastardized the natural laws of the world. Eris says that if he is still alive, then death would be much to merciful for what he had done. Alessia’s eyes light in the fire, and she states that should Eris seek further vengeance, she would offer her sword. Eris smiles, stating that it can be, as they call it in the Capitol, a “quid pro quo”. She then states that after their Circle saves Alessia’s family, perhaps they can concentrate on her own vengeance.

The group decide to sleep in shifts, with Sylvan starting. Before Alessia goes to bed, she pets Hera, and states that should anything happen, she should awaken the group. Hera simply neighs confidently. Sylvan, in her shift, does not encounter any troubles. Eris, on the other hand, experiences a true nightmare. Within her dreams, Eris is resting peacefully, until she starts to breath in smoke. Eris chokes, gagging on the intruding fumes. Her hands fist in struggle, but all she feels is dirt and ash collecting in her palms. When she opens her eyes, all around her is the burning forest of her old grove. The forest is burning, and beyond it is nothing but flame and smoke. A cruel laugh emits through the trees, and a man with severe features, long red and black robes, and a bright red ruby giving off strong arcane energy on his chest appears. His hands flex, and threatening green flames appear. Boiling anger rises in Eris, as she grits out “So you are alive…” The man responds with “Not exactly, not dead, but perhaps not entirely alive…”. He then states that “You will not escape again, for you are coming to me…’It’s’ almost ready. Anytime now.” The man’s skin then melts until its only bone remaining. A green fire tornado surrounds Eris, sucking all the oxygen from the air until she cannot breath. Only then does she wake from her nightmare. Opening her eyes, she sees the Sylvan n staring down at her in concern.

After coughing and sputtering for a few minutes, Eris finally calms down and recounts her dream to her companions. She states solemnly to Alessia that “He’s back.” Alessia knows it was the murderer of Eris’ parents. Eris explains that his name is Duke. He is technically her grandfather, on her mother’s side. He invaded their little grove many years ago, burning it to the ground, and killing her parents in the process. Eris grits her teeth, saying that she was the only survivor. Duke took her captive, as a “replacement” for her mother. She was held by the Duke and his sadistic nephew Sebastian for years. Over the years, she learned of Duke’s disturbing necromancy practice. Eventually, Vali manifested within her as a Wildfire spirit, and she thought she burned both of them to a crisp, escaping the “family” home. Alessia and Sylvan see a truly different side to their seemingly cheery druid friend, as she contemplates all the ways in which she will torture Duke. Eris contemplates dismembering him slowly for eternity, then burning his corpse until it is mere dust. That night, something changed in Eris, or perhaps it was always there, lying beneath. Perhaps her fire held both a passion for the world, a deep grief, and a furious thirst for vengeance.

In the morning, the group is unexpectedly not woken up by a chirping druid. Eris is tired and groggy, empathizing more with her two companions. Continuing on their journey to the Quiet Grove, they start to see a figure in the far distance. When they get closer, they see it is a very elderly man with a missing hand, a bandage around his eyes, and a long white beard. He is dressed in somewhat disheveled linen robes with a purple scarf and a brown leather belt. Alongside him walks a big mastiff dog as well. Eris upon seeing the dog, is put at ease, but Alessia quickly places her hand on her weapon. Eris asks the man who he is and what he is doing in these parts. The man states that he was an adventurer long ago, who held a hammer and a sword as well as anybody. He states his name is Tyk, and his dog is Spike. He flirts a bit with the druid as well, and Alessia finally lowers her hand from her weapon. Tyk asks if the party wishes to hear a tale. Alessia responds with a reluctant, sure, still skeptical. The traveler reveals a tale about a legendary weapon within Cascadia. The weapon is a powerful sword stuck in a stone at the top of the mountains. He warns that the sword is guarded by a White Dragon. Alessia states that she knows that the orcs in Cascadia are particularly savage, uncivilized, and bloodthirsty. Sylvan asks if she has ever been to Cascadia. Alessia admits that she has not, but her father was. Eris asks what his relationship with his family has been like. The fighter states that he does not talk of that side much. Eris saddens, and states that, as a fellow half-breed, it is important to learn more about both sides in life, whatever that may be. Sylvan only nods in agreement. Tyk interrupts the group’s conversation, and states that if they find the sword, he would like to meet them again. Eris asks how they should contact him, and he states that they can simply call upon him. Eris jokes that perhaps they will wish on a star then. Tyk just nods, then leaves, disappearing into the distance once more. Alessia stares at the man, sensing that he feels familiar somehow.

The party make camp, another uneventful travel day. After a peaceful long rest, Eris rises with a bit more energy. She finds a snake, and stretches by it. The snake is playful, slithering close to her, then away. The party moves on, finally at the Quiet Grove. The entrance is lined with enormous trees. The air itself feels much cooler, and Sylvan senses something is watching them closely. The raven hears a low growl arise, and snaps her head into the direction. There, she sees a large monstrosity in the shape of a white wolf. Two other wolves appear in front of Eris and Alessia, and the party commence battle. Sylvan acts first, ranger skills swift as she shoots the first wolf when it leaps to charge at her. The arrow strikes through the wolf’s shoulder. It snarls angrily, while dripping with blood and shimmering blue saliva. The wolf narrowing in on Alessia lunges forward, biting her shoulder hard. Alessia retaliates, smashing the wolf in the head with the butt of her sword. The wolf nearest Eris steps back, and starts to howl directly at the druid. Rather than a howl, a Cone of Cold blasts forward. Eris is able to get out of the way, but is grazed by the deadly ice. In response, the druid fights ice with fire. She directs her hands at the wolf, hitting it with her Burning Hands. The monster whimpers, seared severely by the fire. Eris summons her trusty flame dragon next to another wolf, who is burned by Vali’s appearance. Sylvan casts Zephrys strike, running back then turning, drawing her bow back confidently. When she releases the arrow, it runs right through the wolf’s leg. The creature howls in pain. Alessia is then surrounded by two wolves. One leaps on her back, biting her in the back so hard, she is knocked unconscious. Eris comes to the rescue, and revives the fighter by using Cure Wounds. Eris, to avenge Alessia, sends Valiant to further burn the wolves once again. Sylvan shouts at Eris, asking for some flames for her next attack. Eris happily obliges, preparing a Scorching Ray as the raven oils up one of her arrows. Completely in sync, the druid sends blasts of fire at the first wolf, while the ranger simultaneously hits the wolf straight in the eye with her arrow. When the arrowhead and magical fire make contact, the wolf is immediately burned to a crisp from the severed eye socket. The wolf utters an inhumane scream of pain, that slowly sizzles out as it burns alive. The other two wolves, upon seeing such an explosion, flee the battlefield. Sylvan makes one last attack, sending an arrow straight into one of the surviving wolf’s hind quarters.

After a well fought battle, the Circle of the Hunt takes a much needed short rest. They then stand again before the cold woods. As they start walking through the tall forest, a slight breeze flows through the trees. The party feels a presence, as if they are being watched. Eris stops, taking in the natural surroundings. Once she feels grounded, she states “To this beautiful forest, know we are here in peace and mean no harm. We are honored to be within this great presence, and are simply looking for someone important to one of our own.” In response, the party hears a creaking of branches and a rustling of leaves. Before them, an Awakened Tree greets them. The tree states “You are the most polite one I have come across yet”. Eris bows, thanking the tree for honoring them with its presence. She asks for its name, and it states it is “Bark”. Eris chuckles, stating that the Bark is very clever. The tree rustles with approval. Eris asks about how many have come across this area. Bark states that they have seen many over the decades, and states that they do not see many again. Alessia gestures at the tree, asking if Bark has seen a woman who looks like her, as they are looking for her mother. Bark slowly bends down to get a closer look at Alessia. It states that it has not seen anyone who is blue like her, but that there was a woman, with a dark cloak, who had her nose. It states that she was traveling, trying to find the Kotengu Pass, a place that exists within only the grove. It also states that she was with others, who were hidden, but the tree could see and feel them. They were like insects, trying to hide within Bark’s leaves. The way the tree describes the creatures, it is clear that they are a part of the Viper League. Alessia tenses, asking for when he had seen her last. The tree states that it saw them half a day ago. Before Alessia can depart quickly, Eris asks Bark if they know of the dangers ahead. The tree warns there is a “Silent Mist” on the way to the pass, and that there are dangerous monsters within. “All is silent”. Eris thanks the tree bowing deeply. In thanks for the acknowledgment, Bark lowers its branches, offering Eris its Antidote Bark that can cure any poison if made into tea. The druid gently peels the bark from the tree, thanking it once again.

As the party makes way through the forest, Eris clears out the difficult terrain with her earth powers. The party walk for an endless amount of time, and eventually lose their sense of direction and time. However, they eventually come upon a thick wall of mist. Before they enter, Eris attempts to pray to nature for peace moving forward, but nothing together. happens. Alessia puts her hand through the mist. Nothing happens. The group conclude no matter what, the only way is forward, and walk into the mist together.

As soon as the Circle of the Hunt enter the mist, they hear utterly nothing. Alessia tries to speak, but no noise comes out. Eris tries using a cantrip that requires speaking, but nothing happens. It is ominously clear, there is a Silence Spell in this domain. The druid is able to use Message to magically whisper through the magical silence, stating the same to her companions. Sylvan responds through the cantrip, stating they should sneak through the mist so as not to alert any creatures. Eris and Alessia nod, though Alessia moves a bit farther from the group in consideration of her heavy armor and horse. As the party make their way through the mist, they start hearing strange monstrous sounds. Right in front of Alessia, a menacing creature with a giant eye, elongated spiked spine, and sharp teeth chomping together attacks her. Alessia immediately strikes out at the creature, cutting its arm. In response, the creature attempts to attack her with psychic and necrotic magic. Alessia quickly shakes off the spells. Eris act fast, transforming silently into a Panther. The druid prowls right behind the creature, and leaps forward with her claws unsheathed. The panther barely misses, as the creature dodges the attack. Sylvan then jumps into action, creeping silently through the mist, she draws her Heavy Bow, aiming true. She pulls the trigger, and the arrow slices brutally through the creatures shoulder. The creature lets out a monstrous screech of pain. Suddenly two other creatures, with the same menacing eye, crawl into the battle. Eris summons Vali, who grazes one of the new monsters with flame. In retaliation, the monster sets its sights on the druid, attacking her with a psychic blast. Eris leaps out of the way, but is then hit hard with necrotic damage in its second attack. The necrotic energy is so strong, it burns away Eris’ panther farm, and she is left breathless as a half-elf again. One of the creatures goes after Sylvan, attacking once more with its psychic power. Silvyn receives the attack in full, and hears within her head that the creature seeks a “secret”. Silvyn has no choice but to recount how she had lost her memories, and the creature’s thirst is briefly satisfied. It then looks directly at Silvyn’s broach, leaping forward and snatching it away. The raven grabs for the broach, but is met with a necrotic blast from the second creature. As a result, she must take a healing potion quickly. Silvyn, recovered enough to avenge the theft, gets up ready for a vengeance. The raven takes her crossbow and shoots the creature with the broach straight into its scaly arm, pinning it down to the ground. Silvyn reaches down calmly and takes the broach back. Eris is also hit by the psychic blast, and relives the memory her mother stabbed in front of her. The creature feasts upon the memory, hungry for more pain. Eris, rage coursing through her, transforms into a wolf. Bearing her teeth, she attacks the creature. Her jaw wide, and teeth sharp, Eris sinks her teeth directly into the creature’s eye. She clamps down hard, and the eye explodes with fluid, the creature thrashing in pain. Eris does not let go, she simply shakes the creature back and forth from the eye socket until it stops moving. Alessia is attacked psychically by one of the creatures. This time, the creature desires a fear of the fighter. Alessia feels a great sense of fear, thinking of never being able to return to the Capitol. Alessia responds in kind, swinging her flail into the monster’s side. Eris comes up next, sinking her teeth into the creature’s shoulder. The creature pinned by Silvyn’s arrow, rips its arm free, and attacks Silvyn with a powerful necrotic attack. The raven crumples, unconscious. Alessia runs to her companion, feeding her a healing potion. Seeing Silvyn on the ground, she runs lightning fast at the creature. Teeth beared, the druid aims for the creature’s long neck. She locks her jaw perfectly around the spine, and begins shaking her head aggressively back and forth. Only when the neck completely snaps in half does the druid stop. With her bloody jaw, she tosses the head aside. Turning around, she kicks dirt atop the ravaged body, satisfied with her work. Finally, Alessia faces the final monster, who is bleeding profusely. The half-orc stomps forward, flexing her muscles with a promise of death. When she gets up to the creature, she hauls her spiked flail up. The creature’s eye dilates for one moment, then the flail smashes right down on the pupil. The eye explodes, and the creature immediately falls to the ground.

A battle well fought and won, the group continue forward in complete silence. Time and direction fall away once more as they wander into the unknown. After an unknown amount of time, the group hear a sound behind them. A Kenku, dressed in black robes with a broach similar to Silvyn’s, appears. The Kenku looks directly at Silvyn, and makes several gestures. Silvyn is confused, and just asks “Who are you?”. The robed Kenku makes one final gesture, then spreads its wings. The party hear a strong “swoosh” sound, and are suddenly knocked unconscious.

When the group awakens, they are hog tied and draped over Hera, being lead by a group of robed Kenku. They look up, and see a looming gate that is in the shape of Silvyn’s broach (a Torii Gate). Beyond the gate is a misty, lush green mountain terrain with a thriving village full of small triangle houses made of straw. Kenku of all ages and sizes are running about the bustling village. In observing this strange place, Silvyn’s feelings begin tumbling within her. The party are brought into a wooden cell, and one of the Kenku begins taking Hera away. Before the Kenku can leave, Alessia speaks up, stating “Hurt my horse, and I will burn this place to the ground.” The Kenku reassures the fighter that her horse will be safe and well fed. Once the party is alone, Silvyn struggles in her restraints, eventually able to escape from her ropes. As she moves on to helping her companions with their ropes, she is stopped by a large Kenku with red robes and golden symbols. This Kenku clearly emits an authoritative presence with his prominent beak and posture. He gestures to another Kenku, who then unties Eris and Alessia. Silvyn looks defiantly at the leader Kenku and demands “Who are you?”. The Kenku introduces himself as Daitengu Kaze, the leader of the village. He moves closer, and Silvyn catches his scent. Her eyes dilate in surprise, as she recognizes the smell. This Kenku is her father. Daitengu asks Silvyn to come with him, but she steps back. She states that she wishes to stay with her friends. The Kenku pauses, then steps back and nods. He calls for Bo. The Kenku who untied Eris and Alessia appears beside the village leader. Daitengu asks him to show their guests to their room. The leader departs, but still stares intensely at Silvyn. On the way to their room, Eris asks Bo what this place is. Bo states that it is the Kotengu Pass Village. Alessia’s ears prick at that, and she immediately asks if he has seen a woman who looks like her pass through. Bo states that he has not seen such a woman, and that most people do not even make it this far. Silvyn asks why they are so hidden. Bo states that, due to the past, the village does not wish to interact with the outside world. They intentionally shield themselves, using the mist and monsters as a way to protect the village. Eris asks if they control the monsters or the mist. Bo just responds that the Kenku have an “understanding” with the monsters. The Kenku claim the grove itself as theirs. Upon reaching a bamboo slat door, Bo states this is their room, then promptly departs. However, Eris interrupts Bo’s departure, asking about what happened in the past to make them so disconnected from the outside world. Bo stops, and states solemnly that it was the Viper League seeking power. Alessia asks if her mother has not shown up, what could have happened to her. Bo simply states that “Within the Mist, you reach the end when you are meant to. If she did not make it out, she was not meant to.” Alessia’s stomach drops with despair. Eris pleas for help from the Kenku, to possibly help them get back in to rescue her mother. Bo ominously states that the mists have a mind of their own, the Kenku cannot control them. With that, he leaves with finality.

The group reconvene, finally completely alone. Eris asks Silvyn what happened in there, with the leader. She asks “Do you know what this is all about? Who was that leader?”. Silvyn reveals, to the shock of the others, that Kaze is her father. Eris exclaims “How is that even possible!?”. Silvyn states that, while she has no memories of her biological father, his scent was immediately familiar. It reminded her of Tik-Cha, the Thri-Keen who raised her after her memories were lost.

A little while later, there is a knock at the door, and a female Kenku with a platter of dishes full of raw fish and veggies, greets the group. The Kenku introduces herself as Maru, and states that this is their dinner on behalf of Kaze. Eris munches on the Broccoli as Silvyn consumes the fish. The druid notices that Alessia is just staring at the food. Eris states that she is so sorry about her mother. Alessia just shrugs, feeling hopeless. Eris gets up and looks Alessia in the eye, stating that she promises they will find her, even if they must return into the mist themselves. Alessia looks up at both Eris and Silvyn, stating this is not their battle, she would not expect them to make such a sacrifice. She particularly notes to Silvyn, especially after she just found the father she never knew. Silvyn’s feathers ruffle, and she states she has no intention of abandoning the group. She admits that she is curious about her lost memories of course, but at the end of the day, she does not know Kaze or the village. She has no loyalty to them. But they have fought side by side, and she trusts the group. Eris expresses similar feelings, stating that they have a “quid pro quo” together, they fight for each other, no matter what. Alessia’s heart warms in a way she did not know it could. She states that the VanHolding motto is “Unbroken Vows and Unbroken Oaths”. She then raises her sword, and states that she vows that she would die before leaving their circle. With that, an unbreakable bond is felt through the whole group.

As the party head to bed, Silvyn talks about how eating such decadent food makes her angry. She grew up in tunnels, with scarce food. She fought for even the measliest of nutrition. It feels wrong, knowing that this is the life that was lost. Silvyn states that more than anything, it only increases her loyalty to Tik-Cha, as Tik-Cha was there for her. Tik-Cha found Silvyn, alone and scared in a forest with no memories. Alessia just contemplates the magnitude of losing 12 entire years of her life, and thinks of her own family and how truly important they are to her. Eris empathizes with Silvyn, stating that family is complicated. Alessia walks outside, looking up at the stars. Her anger is boiling forward as well, as she thinks about her mother in black robes with the Viper League. Looking at the sky, she angrily shouts to Tyr. Her voice echos through the village, and eventually dissipates into silence. The party finally sleep, earning a deep rest after such a long day.

In the morning, Maru brings the group tea for breakfast. She states it is their traditional village tea. Eris intakes the herbal brew, while Silvyn looks skeptical. Eris deems the tea delicious and warm, and her companions eventually gulp it down. Everyone feels a renewed sense of power upon drinking the brew. The tea itself provides strategic advantage, giving advantage to everyone in the party for all Saving Throws, Attack Throws, and Skill Checks.

After a little while, Maru brings the party to Kaze for an audience. Maru bows deeply to the leader, as do all the Kenku within the room. The party take the hint and do the same. Daitengu stands with Bo at his side. He gestures for Silvyn to approach. Silvyn steps forward, and immediately asks “Do you know who I am”. Daitengu states solemnly “Yes. You are the daughter of Yama and Kaze of the Kotengu Mountain Village”. Silvyn continues “What happened?”. Kaze recounts the tragic events. Silvyn was born and lived until adolescence in the village. One day, their home was attacked by the Viper League, and Bo took Silvyn into the mists outside of the village to protect her. However, Bo was ambushed, and Silvyn was lost to the woods. Kaze searched, but never found his lost daughter. Admittedly, he could never leave the village because of his responsibilities as leader. Silvyn asks what happened to Yama. Kaze states that she died during Silvyn’s birth. Silvyn states that she had no memory after the age of 12. She contemplates how this meeting must be “pure coincidence”. Kaze simply states that she must have been severely injured to have forgotten so much. However, he states that coincidence and fate are often mistaken for one another. Kaze states that, despite her lost memories, Silvyn has a place within the village should she so desire it. This offer lights a righteous fire within Silvyn. She states that, while she understands the responsibilities he must hold as a leader in this village, she can’t help but ask “Where were you!? I was alone, raised across the world, in tunnels, in a desolate desert. You weren’t there, why should I show any loyalty to you?” Silvyn then turns to her companions, and states confidently that she will not stay, because she has found something to fight for, and friends she can truly trust. She states that they will defeat the Viper League together, and find her friend’s mother.

At that, Kaze asks for Bo to fetch the “Dame”. He then turns around, taking an intricate black yew bow, decorated with carvings of Kenku. He states that this is called the Bow of Shadows. The bow belongs to the leaders of the village, and typically, their successors must pass a trial to claim the right to own the bow. He states that “As my daughter, you have the right to succession. Do you wish to partake in these trials?”. Silvyn just smiles, and states “I’m a pretty good shot”. Kaze nods, and has some Kenkus prepare the trial in the pits.

In that moment, Bo comes back with an eastern appearing woman wearing full chain mail armor. She introduces herself as Dame Alice. She states that she is a part of the Willow Watch rebel group, and has received word that after Phinala’s fall, the Viper League is on its way to attack the village. Alessia notices the same symbol she saw on Lada’s shoulder is engraved on the Dame’s armor. Dame Alice states that the within the Viper League is another woman, one cloaked in black. Alessia cautiously asks “What does this woman look like”. As Dame Alice describes her, it sounds as if it could be Jona VanHolding. At hearing the possible connection to their group, Daitengu’s feathers ruffle, stating that if her mother is a part of the Viper League, the village shall show her no mercy. At that, Alessia jumps into action, stating that if the Kenku harm her mother, they will face her wrath. Eris speaks up, showing Kaze the “hit list” parchment, stating that her mother is a target of the Viper League, why would she be working with them. She states that the more they learn of the Viper League, the more convoluted the conspiracy gets. If anything, they should keep Jona safe so they may figure out what is truly going on. Kaze states that if there is any kind of threat to the village, no matter who, they will treat it in kind. Silvyn then speaks up, vouching strongly for Alessia’s mother. Silvyn states that she has heard nothing but good things about Jona from Alessia, and that she knows in her heart she is a good person and does not deserve to die. Alessia is surprised as to Silvyn’s passion for saving her family, and she grows protective over her friend. Eris states that there is something wrong with this picture, that Jona has to be being manipulated, or working under duress. Perhaps it is a changeling and not the real Jona, in which case, they would need to rescue her regardless. Kaze appears to tire of this conflict, and states “We will see who arrives. And you will either fight or you will be fought against”.

Alessia approaches Kaze, and states “My family is the most important part of my life. I have a father, he is a man of honor, and is deeply protective of his children. If something happened to me, I know with certainty he would search the ends of the earth for me. Lord knows you didn’t.”

Eris then speaks to Kaze, she states “I once lived in a hidden paradise, similar to this one. I loved it, but I wish we had known more about the outside world, had connected with it. As the isolation left us vulnerable, and my home was burned to the ground. I only ask that you act as a wise leader, and not hide yourself away. There is greater possibility in connection, and a paradise can only last so long.”

Silvyn states “If your role was to protect these people, with me as sacrifice, then I understand. I will not hurt the people of this village, because they are good. Maybe things could have been different. But, I’m sorry, I don’t have my memories, and perhaps that’s my own sacrifice.”

Kaze says nothing, though his eyes glint with a deep sadness.

Outside, bells ring. The Circle of the Hunt run out, standing in front of the leader’s hut. A Kenku runs past the entrance to the Torii gate. A giant hammer slams down past the gate, crushing the Kenku. A woman walks forward, draped in dark robes. She is surrounded by ten Yuan-ti. When she looks up, she immediately recognizes Alessia and pauses in fear. The large figure wielding the hammer takes his hand and pushes the woman aside. The figure is an enormous barbaric Yuan-ti. He utters the words “We found you”. The woman flees as he slams his hammer down, and a flash of light erupts in the area. The battle for the Kotengu Village has begun.
